Join me as I react to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Mouse, the 30th Tom and Jerry short released on June 14, 1947, directed by William Hanna & Joseph Barbera, produced by Fred Quimby, with music by Scott Bradley, and animation by Ed Barge, Michael Lah, Kenneth Muse, Al Grandmain, and others. When Tom is fed up with Jerry sipping his milk, he mixes in a potent blend of poisons—moth balls, acid, ammonia—hoping to eliminate the tiny thief. Instead, Jerry downs it and transforms into a super-strong, monstrously buff version of himself. Chaos reigns as the overpowered Jerry chases Tom relentlessly—dodging doom, smashing obstacles, and turning Tom’s traps right back on him. As the potion’s effect wears off, Jerry reverts to normal, only for Tom himself to accidentally drink the rest—shrinking down to a fly-sized version of himself. The short ends with tiny Tom being chased with a flyswatter by the triumphant Jerry—an ironic reversal that seals his fate. This Technicolor gem was nominated for the Academy Award in 1948 (though it lost out to Warner Bros' Tweetie Pie) and showcases some of the best visual transformation work in the Tom and Jerry canon. Animators utilized bold brush-style effects in the transformation sequences, and timing is impeccable, especially the dissolving spoon gag when Tom stirs the poison.
