Why do you feel… nothing?

What happens when someone dies and you feel… nothing?
No tears.
No breakdown.
No collapse.
People expect you to fall apart. And when you don’t, they start judging it.
But there’s actually a name for that.
It’s called Absent Grief.
Absent grief is when you experience little to no emotional reaction after a major loss. And it scares people because they assume something must be wrong.
But hear this clearly:
Numb does not mean you didn’t love them.
Numb does not mean you aren’t grieving.
Numbness is often protection.
When the nervous system is overwhelmed, it sometimes shuts down access to the pain until your body has the capacity to handle it. That can happen months later… sometimes even years later.
Absent grief is not the end of your grief.
It’s often a delay.
And when your system finally has space, the grief may show up in a moment you never expected... a smell, a song, a random Tuesday.
If you’re numb right now, don’t force yourself to perform grief for other people. But don’t ignore it either.
Create space for it.
Because grief has a way of finding its voice when your heart is finally ready to hear it.
