History:

Jenny Craig Pavilion is a 5,100-seat indoor arena located on the campus of the University of San Diego in San Diego, California. Opened in October 2000 after construction began in 1999, the facility cost about $17.5 million to build and features a hardwood playing surface. Designed to reflect the university’s Spanish Renaissance architectural style, the arena blends with the broader aesthetic of the campus. It is owned and operated by USD and is accessible via the nearby Morena/Linda Vista public transit station. The venue is best known as the home court for the San Diego Toreros, hosting the university’s NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as the women’s volleyball team, all of which compete in the West Coast Conference.

Named after weight-loss entrepreneur Jenny Craig, the building has also earned the nickname “Slim Gym,” a lighthearted reference to her fitness brand. Over the years, the pavilion has undergone several upgrades to modernize the fan and athlete experience. In 2015, improvements included a redesigned court floor, new video boards, and LED scorer’s tables. A major round of enhancements followed in 2024, adding a center-hung video board, LED fascia boards along the baseline seating areas, updated lighting, and a new sound system to improve visibility, presentation, and audio quality during events. That same year, naming rights to the arena floor were acquired by Baker Solar and Electric.

Beyond serving as USD athletics’ primary indoor venue, Jenny Craig Pavilion has hosted a wide range of sporting events at conference, collegiate, national, and exhibition levels. It was the site of multiple West Coast Conference basketball championships in the early 2000s, as well as the California Junior College basketball championships. Other basketball-related events have included the Kiwanis Basketball Tournament and several celebrity charity and exhibition games. In volleyball, the arena held early-round matches of the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament in 2004 and 2013, and in 2015 it welcomed an international friendly match between the United States men’s national volleyball team and top-ranked Brazil. The facility has also staged the 2004 Judo National Championships.

The pavilion’s use extends well beyond sports. It has served as a gathering place for major campus and community occasions, including commencement ceremonies and high-profile special events. Notable non-sporting highlights include hosting the official luncheon connected to Super Bowl XXXVII, concerts by major musical acts such as Maroon 5, and appearances by globally recognized speakers like the 14th Dalai Lama and primatologist Jane Goodall. Through its combination of athletics, cultural programming, and ceremonial functions, Jenny Craig Pavilion plays a central role in university life while also functioning as a versatile event space for the wider San Diego community.
