Today we visit the campus of Utah Tech University and their amazing amazing Burns Arena!
History:
Burns Arena is a multi-purpose indoor arena located at 400 South and 700 East in St. George, Utah, near Bruce Hurst Field and Greater Zion Stadium, and is owned and operated by Utah Tech University. The facility opened in 1986 and was originally known as the Dixie Center, serving as a central venue for athletics and community events in the region. When the new Dixie Center opened in 1998, the arena was renamed Burns Arena in honor of M. Anthony Burns. The building contains 4,779 permanent seats arranged across 14 sections, with an overall capacity commonly cited as approximately 5,000 spectators, and it has recorded a peak attendance of 4,257 fans during a men’s basketball game between Utah Tech, then known as Dixie State, and MSU Denver on January 11, 2019. Burns Arena has been the long-standing home of the university’s basketball programs, currently competing as the Utah Tech Trailblazers, and its history closely mirrors the athletic development of the institution itself.
During the years when Dixie State competed in junior college athletics, the arena regularly hosted Scenic West Athletic Conference tournaments and was the site of the intense annual rivalry between Dixie State and the College of Southern Idaho, both nationally recognized junior college basketball powerhouses. One of the most significant milestones in the arena’s history occurred in 2002, when the Dixie State men’s basketball team won the national junior college championship while using Burns Arena as its home court. These years helped establish the arena as a prominent basketball venue in the region and laid the foundation for its continued use as the program advanced to higher levels of competition.
After the university transitioned to NCAA Division II competition, the arena continued to serve as the team’s primary venue as Dixie State competed first in the Pacific West Conference and later in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. In 2010, the Red Storm clinched their first Pac-West regular season title with a home victory at Burns Arena under head coach Tom Whitehead, and that season concluded with a Sweet 16 appearance, further cementing the arena’s role in program history. Following the school’s move to NCAA Division I status, Burns Arena became one of the active venues within the Western Athletic Conference and has remained a consistent home court for Utah Tech basketball.
Beyond Utah Tech athletics, Burns Arena has hosted a variety of notable basketball events, including a 1988 NBA preseason game in which the Utah Jazz defeated the Indiana Pacers behind strong performances from Karl Malone and John Stockton, as well as a 2006 game where UNLV played a designated home contest against Northern Arizona and won decisively. During the 2020–2021 COVID-19 pandemic, the arena gained national attention when the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team temporarily relocated there due to health restrictions in New Mexico, playing three games in January 2021, including a win over Dixie State and a split series against San Jose State. In addition to sports, the arena serves as an important community venue, hosting events such as the Buck-A-Thon, the World Senior Games, concerts, high school tournaments, boxing matches, and other large gatherings, making Burns Arena a versatile facility and a longstanding focal point for sports, entertainment, and community life in southern Utah.
