Paul defends his apostolic ministry and authority in his letter, exposing those who had no legitimate authority. The false ministers had brought to the Corinthians another Jesus, another spirit, and another gospel.

Paul's second letter is very personal, and he demonstrates his protective love and concern for the Corinthians. He reminds them of his sufferings and afflictions as an apostle, identifying them as a sign of his apostleship. Paul defends his apostleship, boasting of his record of accomplishments but also acknowledging that he is called by grace and would never take credit for himself.
