I want to wrap up my thoughts on this whole Athlean-X/Jeff Cavaliere fake weights scandal with one last video. Sorry for beating a dead horse, but it's important. Someone asked me the other day "How do we, as beginners, know which sources to trust?"
I honestly didn't have a good answer. Hence, this video.
:40 PRIMARY SOURCES
If they claim to be science or evidence-based, though should probably be linking papers to support most of their claims, if not all of them. Look at ANY of Jeff Cavaliere's videos, and see how many have data supporting them. You know...research? Meta-analysis? Science? Studies? Data.
If they aren't science based, that's fine. A source doesn't NEED to be science based to be good. But if it IS, or if it's trying to APPEAR to be based in science...LINK IT!
Certifications and degrees are generally good, but plenty of people (like me!) don't have them and still are competent. And some do have them (like Dr. Joel Seedman) and are not.
1:55 LOGIC
If it seems absurd, it probably is. Most advice I give makes practical, logical sense. Occasionally it's counterintuitive, but I'll always be able to explain it in simple and understandable terms.
2:40 FOLLOWERS
A minor metric. Not always really very meaningful.
3:45 RESULTS
Also minor, but important. If someone is selling you something, they should probably be able to apply it to themselves. Just because they look amazing or are strong, that doesn't mean that it'll work for YOU, though! Don't be blinded by genetics, or abs, or steroids.
5:20 SALESMAN/MARKETING
If someone is REALLY pushing their services hard...that's a big red flag. I'm here to help people. I answer a lot of questions for free. Often I don't even mention my coaching or website or book or medium or anything else. Erm, guess I just mentioned them there, technically. Money is important and everyone needs money to live. I've suffered financially before. But...it's far from the most important.
6:55 BEST PRACTICES
It's good to be creative, but if someone is not following industry standards for most things, they are probably going to be wrong on a lot of things. If a large part of their peers do not respect them or take them seriously...also a big red flag.
7:45 SENSATIONALISM/ABSOLUTISM
Never speak in absolutes. If someone oversimplifies everything, another red flag. This stuff is complicated and thus answers are often complicated.
10:40 OVERPROMISING
If it sounds too good to be true...it probably is. Beware of cleanses and 2 week abs. SO MUCH BULLSHIT in the fitness industry.
12:20 LYING
Fool me once, shame on them. Fool me twice, shame on me. If someone does something CLEARLY wrong and doesn't even bother with an apology...how much are they lying about? And what does that say about their character, or lack thereof?
13:07 CONTENT VS PERSON
Assess a person...but also their content. Just because you trust someone doesn't mean that they're always RIGHT. Even me. QUESTION ME, DAMMIT!
13:44 MULTIPLE SOURCES
Finally, get multiple sources. Don't just follow me. Please. I have plenty of videos on other awesome people to follow that know more than me about this kind of stuff.
That's all. Like, subscribe, turn on notifications. All that jazz.
