The federal government is extending the wage subsidy program until December, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday.
As of last week, that program had paid out more than 18 billion dollars to more than 252-,000 companies.
The program covers 75 per cent of wages for eligible companies and non-profits and is at the heart of the government's promise to help Canadians who lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic get back to work.
Trudeau also apologized for not bowing out of the decision-making process that led to the WE charity being awarded a $900 million sole-source contract.
Trudeau says his own involvement with WE and that of his mother and brother should have kept him out of the discussions, and admits he should have known the full details of his family's involvement.
