The Scandlines cargo ferry KRONPRINS FREDERIK entered service in 1981. The ship operated on the Korsor–Nyborg route until May 1997. In November 1997, conversion to a car and passenger ferry began, and on March 26, 1998, it entered service on the Rostock–Gedser route.
In February 2017, regular service on the Rostock–Gedser route ended as newly built ferries were put into service there. After the stern doors were converted in Swinoujscie (Poland), it has been serving as a cargo ferry on the Puttgarden–Rodby route since the end of March 2017, but also as a reserve ferry for the Rostock–Gedser route.
Scandlines will commission the newly built ferry THE BALTIC WHALE in 2026, which means that the KRONPRINS FREDERIK's time with Scandlines may slowly be coming to an end.
