Street Fighter (1994) is a martial arts action film directed by Steven E. de Souza and loosely based on the popular Capcom video game series. The story centers on Colonel William F. Guile, played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, a United Nations military commander leading an international force against the ruthless dictator General M. Bison. Bison has seized control of a Southeast Asian nation and is holding hostages while demanding a massive ransom, setting the stage for a global showdown between good and evil.
The film explores themes of justice, revenge, and power while blending military action with colorful characters drawn from the Street Fighter games. Fighters such as Chun-Li, Ken, Ryu, Blanka, Vega, Sagat, and Zangief are reimagined within a live-action narrative, each pursuing their own goals as alliances shift. While Guile represents order and justice, Bison embodies tyranny and corruption, delivering exaggerated speeches and larger-than-life villainy that define the film’s tone.
Street Fighter received largely negative reviews upon release, criticized for straying from the source material and its uneven tone. However, Raul Julia’s final performance as M. Bison was widely praised for its charisma and theatrical flair, becoming one of the film’s most enduring elements.
