“River Raisin Hymn”
No, I don’t mind talking about her
After all, I write most of my songs about her
Yeah, the Universe, below and above has shown me,
She’s the only one I truly love, and I have sailed every sea
I thought on it and I think the Universe is right
I think she’s the only one for me, the only one
Whoever came to me in a dream, filling voids
Setting her anchor deep, she’s the only time I get deep sleep
She walked out of fog where the Raisin bends slow
With a voice like dusk and a name I don’t know
She don’t stay long, just enough to remind
That the heart’s a compass, and she’s the north I’ll never find
She’s the draw in the current, the pull in the tide
The whisper that lingers when the fire’s died
She don’t belong to the waking or the dead
But she lays on my chest like a riverbed
Some say she’s a ghost, some say she’s a guide
Some say she’s the part of me I buried alive
But I know her hands, I know her breath
She’s the lull before thunder, the hush before death
I’ve left offerings—songs, stones, and wine
At the bend where the sycamores lean in time
But she comes when she wants, and she leaves like a sigh
And I sleep like a child when she passes by
She’s the draw in the current, the pull in the tide
The whisper that lingers when the fire’s died
She don’t belong to the waking or the dead
But she lays on my chest like a riverbed
And I dream, and I drown, and I rise from the deep
She’s the only time I get deep sleep
At the Mill, her shadow sways in time with me
