Itinerary
From the Trailhead at the end of Routa N-55 in Termas de Chillán, trail Valle Aguas Calientes to the junction for the trail towards the summit of Volcán Chillán Viejo. The trail towards the summit of Volcán Chillán Viejo eventually faints and the route becomes a cross country route to the summit.

Hike Notes:
The route to the summit of Volcán Chillán Viejo is not a technical route in the summer time when snow fields can be easily traversed or avoided by hiking around them. In such conditions it can be considered a hike entailing a final cross country section to the summit which is mainly class two terrain. With that being said, the ascent presents significant sections of steep sandy terrains, constant sun exposure and no water after the first mile on the Valle Aguas Calientes trail. Strong wind can be common and elevation gain is significant (about 5164 ft / 1573 m). With all these factors combined, it is definitely not a hike for everyone.
The views from the top and on the higher part of the route are spectacular, so is the traversed volcanic landscape which includes hot streams and springs, fumaroles, lava fields and other volcanic features. Also, to be mentioned, the view of the Valle de Aguas Calientes from above. I did this hike the day before I started the multi-day traverse route from Volcan Chillán to Volcan Antuco. I truly enjoyed it and I would do it again!
