The hike from Laguna Cochor to tje Sollipulli South ridge follows a use trail, navigation is pretty straight forward but the use of a off-line map on a phone o GPS device is reccomended.
Notes about the map: the map is indicative of the trip itinerary although mileage and moving time cannot be considered as reference as I often deviated from the route for filming and photography; also the moving time on the map includes all stops and breaks during the day as I stop recording only once camp was setup for each day.
Hiking Notes:
When visiting Chile's Araucanía region a hike to the Sollipulli Volcano rim is highly recommended even to casual hikers. Sollipulli features a very large and impressive glaciated crater. The normal and easier hike route is the one to the North side of the rim. It is also the route which provides the closest view of the crater. The route to the Souther ridge (and the Southern Summit of Sollipulli) is longer and more difficult, but it is a spectacular hike through a variety of mountain landscapes with the final prize of the Sollipulli crater view. Because I started my hike from Laguna Cochor where I camped the night before, I knew that it was very unlikely that I could have made it to the Sollipulli South summit on a day hike, particularly while filming. I was able to spend a couple of hours walking along the South ridge and enjoying the amazing views of the crater, the valley below the ridge and the expansive views South towards the Villarrica to the Lanin Volcanoes. Overall, a superb hike with magnificent views. The landscape is rugged and remote. I did not meet any other hiker during the three days backpacking trip. Great backpacking. I simply wished I had an extra day to move the camp up from Laguna Cochor to be able to make it to the South summit of Sollipulli.
