The Hornbill Festival is here. Tourists from across the country, and some from outside India, are here. There is happiness in the air, excitement among tourists and locals, and ministers and senior government officials are lining up to give one speech after the other. Once Hornbill Festival is over, the chief minister, his party, the opposition and everyone else will get back to work, celebrate Christmas, and then start preparing for elections. Amid all this, Leang Konyak will not be mentioned. No one will talk about her, or Awat Konyak, and not one of the ministers or officials will be there to help Yeihwang when he has his seizure. Or when his hands and legs go stiff. The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO), which was once spearheading the movement for justice for the Oting massacre, is now so ‘focused’ only on the demand for Frontier Nagaland.
On December 4, 2021, in what would have been an eventful pre-Christmas reunion, Assam Rifles ambushed, and shot coal miners of Oting village in Mon District of Nagaland, killing six civilians, and critically injuring two more. Following this, in a melee over the incident (between the villagers and the Assam Rifles), seven more villagers were killed in indiscriminate open firing, including several injured. In response to the killing of the Nagas, the community came forth to register their protest. This led to a series of violent confrontations, and eventually, the Assam Rifles resorted to another round of open firing, gunning down one more civilian.
Even if no one is talking about Oting and the plight of the family members of the deceased, we will. So in this week’s Decoded, we bring to you what we saw during our visit to Mon district since we genuinely believe that this must be heard by everyone.
