A hot Memorial Day 2016 finds us deep in coal country on CSX's CV Subdivision between Pineville, KY and Corbin, KY. This scenic and rarely photographed line acts as CSX's link between their Cincinnati to Atlanta main and the coal fields of central Appalachia.
With the recent decline of coal demand in the US, the CV Subdivision has fallen on hard times. Whereas the line used to see 15-20 daily trains, that number has dropped off to 2 or less on average. However, on this particular day, we were treated to a total of three trains in daylight; two on the CV main and one on the left fork of the Straight Creek Branch.
