Hiking Kelso Dunes Trail | Mojave National Preserve, California

There is no fee to get into Mojave National Preserve. The Kelso sand Dunes are located 84 miles (135 km) from Twentynine Palms, CA. The Kelso Dunes are a short drive from the Kelso Depot Visitor Center and can be seen from the Kelbaker road.

The hike is 3 miles round trip. The sand field covers 45 square miles and its highest dune is 650 feet high. It is strenuous as it is hiking in the sand. It is moderately trafficked. The Kelso Dunes are known for a phenomenon called "singing" or "booming" sand - a sound similar to a cello when the sand is moving in really hot temperatures. We saw many families and children with big cardboard pieces to slide down the dunes. Pack it in, pack it out. Dogs on leashes are allowed on this trail.

We have been hiking for some time now. This trail was a good work out! You can find some wildlife (like lizards). Even if you don’t see any, you can find proof of their activity from their prints in the sand. The trail is scenic thanks to the color contrasts of the light pink sand, blue sky, and mountains around. The view from the top of the dunes is spectacular. It makes every effort worthwhile. We loved this hike!

There is no shade at all on the trail. Bring a lot of water. Vault bathroom at the trailhead but no water available. Kelso Depot Visitor Center has water available. Also, Mojave National Preserve is far from any gas station so go with a full tank.
