Описание: This video demonstrates experiments that you can do with a polariscope and the corundum kit from Snellius Minerals LLC. We review some of the properties of corundum and then use a natural corundum sample to examine the macroscopic crystallography of corundum. We discuss the optical indicatrix for corundum and how the crystallography of corundum relates to the optical properties that we can observe. Unfortunately, our natural sample of corundum is a bit too opaque to transmit light. We then examine the optical properties of a specially cut synthetic corundum sample. This sample is cut to provide 2 viewing directions down the circular section of the corundum (plane of the a-crystallographic axes) and 1 viewing direction down the optic axis of the corundum (c-crystallographic axis). This allows us to investigate the anisotropy of corundum with respect to optical properties, and how we can use these optical properties to determine the crystallographic orientation of our synthetic corundum sample.
