Описание: This video examines experiments that you can do with a polariscope and a variety of quartz slices from Snellius Minerals LLC. We review some of the properties of quartz and then examine a natural quartz crystal to determine the macroscopic crystallography of quartz. We discuss the optical indicatrix for quartz and how the crystallography of quartz relates to the optical indicatrix. For our first experiment, we investigate a slice of clear quartz (rock crystal) and discover that quartz demonstrates some optical phenomena different from what would be expected for a standard uniaxial mineral when viewed along the c-crystallographic axis. This is ultimately due to the optical activity of quartz, which arises from the interaction of light with the helical chains of silica tetrahedra that spiral along the c-crystallographic axis of quartz. This also allows us to observe Brazil law twinning in our quartz slice, and an unique quartz uniaxial optic axis interference figure. We then examine a slice of gray/brown quartz (smoky quartz), a slice of purple quartz (amethyst), and a slice of yellow quartz (citrine).
