Описание: EL CENTRO, CALIF. — Boyle Heights artist and Imperial County native Ernesto Yerena Montejano returned to his hometown of El Centro, California, the week of May 23-30, 2021, to paint a COVID-19 memorial mural commissioned by the state of California as part of an awareness campaign aimed at some of the state's hardest-hit communities, of which Imperial County was one of the worst. Some 730 people have died since the start of the pandemic. The mural was a collaboration between Yerena, photographer Arlene Mejorado, and Yerena's sister-in-law-to-be, Ayerim Leon, who served as inspiration for the image in her job as a travel nurse. The piece, done primarily during nighttime hours, was painted on the outside of the former Cynthia's Flower Connection at 739 N.
