On April 14, Director Nicole Ma will discuss her film "Putuparri and the Rainmakers." This documentary spans 10 transformative years in the life of Tom Putuparri Lawford, as he navigates the chasm between his western upbringing and his growing determination to fight for his family’s homeland. When Putuparri travels with his grandfather and other Wangkajunga elders to Kurtal, a sacred waterhole in the Great Sandy Desert, he learns that the dreamtime myths are not merely stories. Ma travels with Putuparri on his arduous journey as he shoulders the responsibility of pursuing the community’s longstanding claim to Aboriginal Title to Kurtal, a site of immense cultural spiritual significance. A powerful statement about the spiritual power of place. (Nicole Ma, 2015, 97 min.).
Note: Due to the length of the film (97 minutes), it will not be screened as part of the program on April 14.
This event is presented in partnership with the International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management and the Denver American Indian Commission.
