“As a child, I remember stories about the past. I heard about life in the Great Sandy Desert, where my family comes from.” Tom, like most of his generation, only knew of his ancestral home from hearsay. For all but the very oldest of the tribe, Kurtal was just a name. But Tom’s grandfather, Spider, had helped keep the name alive: “Spider was always singing… it was always about Kurtal in the Great Sandy desert, the country that he was forced to leave after the kartiya came – the white man.”
It is against this background of tragic loss that Tom ‘Putuparri’ dedicates himself to the struggle of reclaiming his homeland. Battling against bureaucracy and political apathy, Tom has devoted years to this cause: “our land claim took nearly fifteen years to get through the courts and many of the old people have died along the way. But it looks like the big day has finally arrived."
Throughout this fight for land rights Tom must also face his own demons – a history of alcoholism and violence: “I drink. You know it messed me up.” Tom is not alone with this problem and many of the indigenous community, often marginalised in Australia, have problems with alcohol and the law; this was true of many of the youths with whom Tom was working in the land claim: “Most of them boys, they was getting into trouble with the police.”
In this sensitive and moving documentary, we follow Tom in his immense undertaking to reclaim the land taken from his ancestors and preserve an age-old culture that is now understood by a dwindling number of elders, whilst coming to terms with his own dark past.
