Have you ever thought of yourself as a walking nervous system? Well you are! You are a walking network of nerves that’s constantly channeling electrochemical energy as you interact with the world around you!
And what does this have to do with enmeshment and self-differentiation? Well, we are born intertwined with the nervous systems of our family members as they need to be able to “feel” us in order to respond to our needs. After all, we are born a tiny, highly dependent, and extremely needy little creature.
But as we grow and mature, and become more capable of meeting our own needs. We begin to self-differentiate - or quite literally begin to recognize ourselves as a separate and autonomous nervous system. This is if there is healthy and ongoing development in our family system.
But in enmeshed family systems, there’s arrested development! Meaning our nervous system continues to be overly intertwined with our family’s nervous system when we are adults. This is what enmeshment really means! Our nervous system is enmeshed with that of others!
So we feel everything our family feels. We take on all of their stress and anxiety. And we feel overly responsible for their nervous system’s reactions.
Self-differentiation in adult life means beginning to see our own separateness and encapsulate our nervous system so we can “ground” better. We can still remain connected to those we love! Just from a different emotional state.
Have you ever thought of yourself as a walking nervous system? What does this video bring up for you as you reflect on that idea? How does your nervous system react to the world around you?
