Shockwave Therapy (also known as ESWT - Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy) is very useful for the following situations.
1. Chronic Tendonitis - pain and inflammation symptoms that persist for more than 6 months.
2. Calcified Tendonitis - Calcium deposit "bone fragment formation" in the tendon - this is usually visible on diagnostic ultrasound imaging.
The ESWT can help to break down the chronic tissues and calcification to allow the body to "restart" and continue its normal healing process. This would be the treatment of choice for calcified tendonitis as conventional cortisone injection does not remove the presence of the calcification.
ESWT is useful for the following conditions.
a) Rotator Cuff Tendonitis ( e.g. supraspinatus and infraspinatus)
b) Tennis Elbow
c) Golfer's Elbow
d) Knee Patellar Tendonitis ( Jumper's Knee)
e) Hip - Greater Trochanter Pain Syndrome
f) Achilles Tendonitis
g) Plantar Fasciitis/ Calcaneal heel spur / Plantar Faciopathy
The Treatment protocol consists of weekly treatment for 5-6 sessions. Usually, aggravation of symptoms are present for 3-4 weeks but improves significantly after that. Try to avoid any anti-inflammatory agents during the first few weeks. ( Ice, Anti-inflammatory medications such as Advil, Aleve, Naproxen) The purpose is to allow your body to go through its normal healing stages and achieve recovery.
ESWT is a very effective treatment method for the indicated conditions.
