Phillip Sear plays a solo piano arrangement by Preston Ware Orem of the seventh piece from Rubinstein's 1880 'Bal Costumé', a suite of 20 'Morceaux Caracteristiques' for piano duet.

Anton Rubinstein (1829-94) needs no introduction from me, as one of the leading pianist-composers of the 19th century. Much of his music is neglected however, although this is being put to rights in the early 21st century as his larger scale works are being recorded and perfomed more. The arranger, Preston Ware Orem (1865-1938), from Philadelphia, unusually did all his study in the USA and did not finish up in Europe. He held various teaching and organist posts in Philadelphia (excepting a spell in Los Angeles from 1889-95).
