In a groundbreaking study, researchers from the Federal University of São Carlos, ETH Zurich, and the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics have proposed a novel quantum optics theory that reinterprets classical interference patterns. Published in Physical Review Letters, the study suggests that classical interference arises from specific two-mode binomial states—collective bright and dark entangled states of light—rather than traditional wave superposition.
This new framework builds upon concepts from Dicke’s bright and dark states of atoms, replacing atoms with optical modes containing zero or one photon. In this context, “bright” states can excite a ground-state atom, while “dark” states, due to destructive interference, cannot. The researchers analyzed the double-slit experiment using both single-photon (quantum) and coherent (quasi-classical) states, demonstrating that observed interference patterns correspond to alternating bright and dark photon states.
This particle-based perspective challenges the traditional wave-centric view of interference, offering a unified understanding that bridges classical and quantum optics. The implications of this theory extend to quantum information science and our fundamental comprehension of light-matter interactions.
