SEASON ONE: BONUS VIDEO TWO
This week’s video Peircean semiotic theory for illustrators and designers is a special on how Semiosis’ sign-action works using a box metaphor.
Peirce created the name Semiosis and defined its meaning as sign-action.
In around 10-minutes I will use a box metaphor by Roderick Munday to explain the sign-action. With this metaphor you will see how the client, the creative and the audience are all crucial to effective semiotic communication.
Peirce's Semiosis involves three things working together…
• The intended concept to be communicated
• How we shape that concept's visual representation within illustration or graphic design
• How our target audience interprets the concept
connotatively from our design visual communications.
By putting Peirce's complex theoretic language into designer-centric terms in the video, you will see HOW Semiosis forms an underpinning structure to enhance how YOU can visually communicate. By
manipulating the semiotic sign-action you can communicate with more precision to your audience.
This video helps you to move beyond Peirce's obtuse choice of words, and move deeper into the benefits of understanding Semiosis.
Next week I will return to the normal run with the fourth Semiosis 101 omnibus video.
