From controlled burns, to planting native species, to maintaining roads that can serve as fire breaks, foresters work year-round to prevent wildfire. Join Rayonier at a controlled burn site in Forks, WA, where we'll talk about the work we're doing to reduce wildfire risk. We'll also go to Port Gamble, WA, to hear from a Washington Department of Natural Resources fire regulation program manager who talks about the important role forestry companies play in both preventing and responding to wildfires in their communities. Did you know? Controlled burns are only conducted under specific conditions, including favorable smoke dispersal. They reduce the chance of catastrophic wildfires, which release massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.
An analysis of our 2023 burn pile emissions showed just 1/4 of the smoke per-acre compared to a wildfire. And a wildfire can encompass an exponentially larger land area. Oregon's 2020 wildfires consumed more than 1 million acres and released 25 million metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
