Our adventure begins at Inverness Train Station, where travelers arrive from Glasgow or London into a city that feels like an old-world Highland capital. The first stop is the famous Victorian Market, opened in 1870 — a beautiful covered arcade filled with independent shops, cozy cafés, local crafts, and shelter from Scotland’s famous “liquid sunshine.”
Next, we step into the magical atmosphere of Leakey’s Bookshop, the largest second-hand bookstore in Scotland, housed inside a former church. Towering shelves, wooden balconies, and the warm smell of old books create one of the most unforgettable literary spaces in Europe.
Leaving the city center, we follow the peaceful banks of the River Ness, walking toward the iconic Ness Bank Footbridge, lovingly called the “Bouncy Bridge.” Built in 1988 to replace a Victorian bridge, its gentle movement has become a fun tradition for visitors. Nearby, historic suspension bridges designed by early engineers reveal the city’s hidden engineering heritage.
A short stroll leads us onto the beautiful Ness Islands, a network of wooded islands connected by elegant Victorian bridges and surrounded by fast-flowing river water. Here you’ll discover:
• The playful Log Ness Monster sculpture carved from a fallen tree
• The dramatic stone artwork known as The Gathering Place
• A hidden Earth Amphitheater carved into the landscape
• Towering Scots pine trees and peaceful river paths
Along the walk, we explore fascinating Highland history including Inverness Cathedral, memorials honoring World War heroes, and the remarkable story of the Moon Tartan — a real Scottish tartan carried to the Moon during the Apollo space mission by astronaut Alan Bean, a descendant of Clan McBean.
Nature lovers will enjoy spotting wildlife such as seals, otters, deer, birds, and even bats along the riverbanks. We also share the mysterious legend of the 64-pound salmon — a record-breaking fish that was never officially recognized, becoming one of Inverness’s most famous river stories.
For hikers and adventurers, Inverness marks the end of the legendary Great Glen Way, a long-distance trail stretching across the Highlands. Whether you’re planning a trip, love walking tours, enjoy history and legends, or simply want to explore Scotland from home — this journey through Inverness delivers beauty, culture, mystery, and calm in every step.
