High-carb fuelling has become one of the biggest shifts in endurance sport over the last decade. What used to be instinct has now turned into a far more precise strategy built around grams of carbohydrates, sodium intake, and gut tolerance.
For many athletes, the early version of this was simple: if something felt off during a run, the first fix was usually food. Fatigue, irritability, loss of focus, a gel or sports drink often solved the problem. Today, we understand why. At race intensity, the body is burning through carbohydrates RAPIDLY, and keeping that system supplied becomes critical for both physical performance and mental clarity.
The key detail most runners overlook is that fuelling tolerance is completely trainable. That’s why fuelling strategies shouldn’t be saved for race day experimentation but rather treated like a skill that should be developed alongside the rest of your training.
