The Scutari were formidable, swift, and well-equipped medium infantrymen who form the backbone of Iberian armies. These versatile warriors exceled against cavalry and light infantry, and can even stand their ground against heavier troops. Known for their agility and effectiveness, they play a crucial role in the Iberian military strategy, embodying the fierce determination and combat prowess typical of Iberian fighters.
Referred to as Scutari by the Romans due to their large oval shields (from the Latin "scutum"), these Iberian spearmen are equipped with a combination of effective weaponry and protective gear. Their primary weapon is the soliferrum, an all-metal spear feared for its lethality. Additionally, they carry a short straight sword, similar to the design of the later Roman gladius, and a small dagger for backup. Our representation of the Scutari wears a celtic style mail vest. However, they may have also worn scale armour or similar armour to their lighter counterparts the Caetrati.
The Scutari's large oval shields and armor made them resilient on the battlefield, allowing them to withstand and launch powerful attacks. Their equipment made them versatile fighters, capable of both offensive strikes and defensive stands. As permanent warriors, unlike the more temporary Caetrati, the Scutari were more experienced and better equipped, often forming the main line in Iberian armies.
Scutari employed a blend of skirmishing and close combat tactics, making them a versatile force in battle. Initially, they used their soliferrum spears to engage enemies at a distance. This tactic was particularly effective against cavalry and light infantry, disrupting enemy formations before the Scutari closed in for hand-to-hand combat with their short swords and daggers.
Their speed and agility allowed them to execute tactical ambushes and rapid strikes, catching enemies off guard. Iberian warriors, including the Scutari, were known for their ability to hide and observe their foes, launching coordinated attacks followed by swift retreats. These hit-and-run tactics, known to the Romans as "concursare," required high levels of organization and signaling, often achieved using rounded ceramic horns.
The Iberians' unpredictable and effective battlefield maneuvers kept their enemies, including the Romans and Carthaginians, on edge. Despite lacking a unified leadership, temporary alliances among Iberian tribes allowed them to present a formidable resistance against foreign invasions. Their determination to remain independent and their skill in warfare made them a significant obstacle for over a century.
The Scutari's fighting style was not just about brute strength but also about cunning and strategy. Their ability to adapt to various battlefield conditions and execute complex maneuvers made them a key component of Iberian military success. Their resilience, skill, and determination exemplified the fighting spirit of the Iberian people, leaving a lasting impact on the history of warfare in the region.
