After the conclusion of the second world war and the discovery of gulag-style concentration camps all around Germany and its occupied regions, as well as records of activities by SS officers, the allies set up a series of trials known as the nuremburg trials. These were to try German politicians, Generals and officers for war crimes committed during the second world war. Almost all tried were convicted, of them, some were sentenced to execution, some to long prison sentences, and some committed suicide before they could be executed.
