Well, semen analysis is the very basic test that we do on males. This is done to evaluate the sperm parameters in the semen sample. A person may be producing semen but it need not necessarily have sperm. By doing semen analysis, first we see the no of sperm, if it is present or not. If it is present in the requisite number and whether they are mobile and whether they are of the proper shape and size. This is called morphology. If there are any abnormalities in these, we go ahead certain other tests known as sperm function tests. Nowadays, semen analysis is quite standardized. We have world health organization(WHO), which has given certain standards according to which we evaluate the semen. It is an objective test.

Semen analysis does have a lot of importance in evaluation of the male. However, it does not tell us whether the male can still have fertilization capacity or not. This can be found out through the sperm function test. Semen analysis tells us just whether sperms are there or not but whether they are functioning or not, whether they have the capacity to cause fertilization. All these depend on sperm function test. Whether, the sperm can go and get attached to the egg, whether it can penetrate the shell of the egg and whether it can actually combine with the egg to give us an embryo. These are known as sperm function tests or sperm capacitation tests or sperm DNA test. On the whole, they are called as sperm function tests.
