Check out this video to know exactly how to diagnose infertility both in men and women. Infertility is not just the condition of the female. We need to do the diagnosis in both the partners. Their could be a fault in either male or female or both or it can also be unexplained. We generally evaluate both partners together.We usually start with a couple of questions and give them a questionnaire. We ask the female whether her periods are regular. What is the duration of their periods and how is the flow?We ask their medical history, illnesses of the past and whether they have undergone any lower abdominal surgeries. Reason is to find whether they have been using any chronic medications. By asking questions, we gain familiarity and to determine the cause for infertility. We start with a couple of tests that are important. We need to evaluate which part of the reproductive system is not functioning. We need to know if a fault exists in ovaries, tube or uterus. We do hormonal tests and ultrasound on the ovary to see if it is producing eggs or not. We do a serial ultrasound to see if the patient is ovulating. We need to know if the tubes are open For this, we pass a dye. We visualize whether the dye is spilling out from the tubes or not by ultrasound or X-Ray. We need to know if the uterus is good enough to receive the pregnancy. A simple ultrasound scan is enough to see if there are any lumps in the uterus, polyps in the uterus. Is it of normal shape, normal size and in normal position. If nothing is detected, we go for hysteroscopy and laparoscopy.

Hysteroscopy is an endoscopic surgery that is non-invasive. We pass a small camera in a scope through the cervix into the uterus. We visualize the cavity of the uterus to check for major abnormalities. A laparoscopy is a key hole surgery. We pass it into the uterus to check if there is anything else stopping the lady from being pregnant.Simultaneously, we can carry on any corrective surgery. For males, we need a simple semen analysis.
