Kelly's Condition:
Kelly was rescued the day before after becoming entangled in fishing line.
She is in critical condition.
Suffering from fibropapilloma (FP), with visible tumors around her eyes and neck.
Very emaciated, indicating a long-standing condition.
She is covered in algae and epibiota, a sign of weakness and lethargy at the surface.
She is very weak and inactive, although she can lift her head to breathe.
She is severely dehydrated and has very low blood counts, especially high uric acid, indicating possible kidney problems.
Tests and Treatment:
Video of Kelly's first check-up with Dr. Terry Norton and team.
The staff took blood samples (which was difficult due to the turtle’s dehydration), cleaned the shell, and administered subcutaneous fluids and intravenous (IV) fluids to rehydrate and provide vitamins (especially Vitamin B).
Next plan:
Kelly will have a CT scan the next day at a local hospital to check for internal tumors.
The CT scan is important because the hospital cannot treat internal tumors. If there are, Kelly will likely be euthanized.
If there are no internal tumors, Kelly will have a long road to recovery to be strong enough to have surgery to remove the external tumors, with the ultimate goal of being released back into the wild.
