The image on the left?
A healthy Achilles.
The image on the right?
A torn Achilles.
That torn one was mine.
January 2015.
And Here’s the Wild Part
When it happened, I was already plant-based.
So you already know what the internet did…
“Your Achilles tore because you eat plants.”
Meanwhile, Kobe Bryant tore his Achilles and nobody said:
“Yeah, that happened because he ate meat.”
Make it make sense.
Haters will always find a reason.
I Had Two Choices
1️⃣ Fall into depression
2️⃣ Get fat, eat junk, disappear
3️⃣ Come back a year later with a “transformation story”
Or…
🔥 Use it as fuel
And I chose fuel.
There was no chance I was going to be:
• Out of shape
• Making excuses
• Using my injury as a pity story
The Goal
I asked my orthopedic surgeon:
“How long does recovery usually take?”
He said:
“4–6 months… sometimes a year.”
I said:
“What’s the fastest you’ve ever seen?”
He said:
“2–3 months.”
I said:
“Cool. That’s the goal.”
The Rules I Set
Rule #1: Don’t get fat
I immediately adjusted my calories and macros using MyFitnessPal.
No legs = lower energy demand.
So calories had to come down.
Rule #2: Recover as fast as possible
No alcohol.
No junk.
No inflammation.
I doubled down on:
• Vegetables
• Fruits
• Anti-inflammatory foods
Things like:
• Tofu scrambles
• Seitan curry
• Turmeric-rich meals
Natural anti-inflammatories. Real food.
Rule #3: Flex it
Not ego—proof.
This injury happened January 14, 2015.
By March 29, 2015, I was flexing again.
Two months.
The Result
That recovery got me published in Vegan Health & Fitness Magazine —
magazines sitting inside Whole Foods nationwide.
Not talking about recovery.
Showing it.
The Bigger Message
Injuries don’t define you.
Your response does.
I turned my lowest moment into proof of what’s possible.
