A pair of late-afternoon videos at this pair of level crossings in the market town of Saxmundham in the East of Suffolk. Saxmundham is one of three regular passing points on this hourly-served rural line between Ipswich and Lowestoft along side Bealings and Beccles, but this time in the day on a weekday typically sees trains cross elsewhere, so both crossings could be filmed without either a mad dash between the two or an hour's wait in the town. Both are controlled from the signal box by the station, also acting as the signalling centre for close to the entire line, and had new barriers fitted toward the tail end of 2020. As is the case with a number of older crossings around this Eastern region, the tops of the wigwags' supporting masts behind the wigwags themselves are noticeably darker than the rest.
The first crossing is right by the station on Station Approach (just at the end of Albion Street), and is much quieter for road traffic compared to the second at the end of Chantry Road, but the latter is quite a rare type of crossing. It's controlled from the signal box, but is further away and there is no proper CCTV, so as the crossing is in direct view of the signaller and not more than about a quarter of a mile away, it can be lowered without issue and at the same time as Albion Street's crossing, whose alarms continue ever-so-slightly longer than its allowing you to hear it from Chantry Road just as the barriers have dropped. It is one of only a few remaining examples of this type of crossing anywhere in the country. I'd been meaning to return to this pair of crossings for quite a while, and I hope you enjoy these videos! Both are un-cut as they're operated very efficiently.
