When you think of the world map, probably this is the image that comes to mind—it's everywhere, in atlases, schools, and on Google Maps. But there's a problem: it's very, very wrong.

Take a look at Greenland; it looks huge on this map. It seems to be about the same size as Africa, when in reality, it's more than 14 times smaller. The same goes for Russia; it looks massive, connecting the United States and Europe via land. However, when moved towards the equator, this is the actual size of Russia.

This distortion happens because all maps today follow the Mercator projection. The farther a landmass is from the equator on a Mercator map, the more stretched out it appears.

While there's a vast library of map projections, each with a new perspective; yet the Mercator stubbornly remains the popular choice for a general world map. But remember, there's no map that is completely accurate.
