At a grand feast among the Phaeacians, the blind bard Demodocus sings of the Trojan War, and though the hall rejoices, Odysseus secretly weeps at the memory of his past. After proving his strength in the athletic games, he again listens as the bard sings of the Wooden Horse and the fall of Troy. Moved by his visible grief, King Alcinous demands to know the stranger’s true identity, setting the stage for Odysseus to finally tell his story.
