"Democratic Taiwan’s raucous 9-in-1 elections in November provided a stark contrast to protests in China, dubbed by some as the ‘A4 Revolution.’ Protesters angered by three years of heavy-handed COVID restrictions swept across multiple cities, including Shanghai and Beijing, and more than 50 universities – clutching blank pieces of paper to symbolize the silencing and erasing of people’s voices.
In this episode, we ask how the Chinese Communist Party may respond to the largest protests during Xi Jinping’s leadership and what it means for the future of his regime. We contrast Taiwan’s COVID strategy and explore the issues behind voter dissatisfaction with the government, including perceptions of mishandling of vaccines.
Our panelists, Yen Chen-shen, National Chengchi University Professor of Political Science, and Stephen Tan, International Policy Advisory Group Attorney and Managing Director, debate what could happen in the 2024 general election, which presidential candidates each party is likely to select, and how the KMT and DPP may handle the China factor.
We also speak to Chou Chun-mi, Pingtung’s magistrate-elect and the first female chief in the southern county’s history, Alexander Huang, KMT International Affairs Director, and find out from Sean King, Park Strategies Senior Vice President, the U.S. reaction to the election results.
