Isaac Porter, MD explains that a pterygium (carnosidad) is a growth over the cornea and how it can be treated. A pterygium is usually caused by UV light exposure or frequent irritation of the eye causing the thin skin that covers the white of the eye (conjunctiva) to grow centrally over the clear cornea. This usually is a wing-shaped growth and can be removed surgically when it is bothersome.
