Previously, we knew that there are five layers in the cornea. Recently, researchers at the University of Nottingham identified and documented a sixth layer near the back of the cornea that they named Dua's layer after the lead investigator Professor Harminder Dua. Watch this episode of A State of Sight with Isaac Porter, MD to learn more about this exciting new development.
Based on the report, it seems that Dua's layer may remain along with the other back layers of the cornea, Descemet's membrane and endothelium, in some cases of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty. This layer appears to be stronger than Descemet's membrane and may provide more stability for the cornea when it remains.
