This The Terrace Apartment interior design house tour project reflects on the impacts of new digital technologies and new ways of living by transforming a historic icon of São Paulo's modern architecture, designed by Botti and Rubin in 1962, into a hyper-connected home that prioritizes sustainable solutions. The flexible and reconfigurable habitat is immersed in a real urban forest, creating an innovative space for living.
The Terrace Apartment brings together the physical and digital realms to create a hybrid spatiality. Through automation, this space is made responsive to different needs - from everyday life to workstations, parties or cinema nights. By leveraging mobile devices, smart keypads and voice commands, users can manage the house system remotely or locally. Accesses, lighting, irrigation systems, audio-video equipment, curtains and furniture are all automated for convenience and comfort.
The inhabitants desired to live in an apartment with a balcony, however, this building did not have such an option. Nevertheless, due to its glass facade and floor-to-ceiling windows, the residents decided to convert the entire apartment into a balcony. It houses various species of plants, many of them native to Brazil. This has resulted in a true urban forest populated by fruit trees, productive vegetable gardens, and species with flowers.
The Terrace Apartment project breaks away from the traditional apartment layout which traditionally adheres to the so-called 'bourgeois residential tripartition' originating in France in the eighteenth century. This tripartition divides homes into social, intimate, and service areas. With a flexible floor plan allowing for the movement of walls or pieces of furniture, we have given the resident a more active role in setting up their home. Rather than simply designing rooms such as a bedroom, living room, and kitchen, our design focuses on activities that take place within them such as working, sleeping, eating, entertaining guests, caring for clothing items and relaxing. In doing so, we offer a dynamic and interactive architecture that can easily accommodate varying daily practices.
