The Government of Canada advises travelers to exercise a high degree of caution in Cuba due to shortages of food, medicine, fuel, water, and frequent unpredictable power outages. Still, the pull of the ocean, the warmth, and the simple joy of travel calls us forward. Sometimes adventure means accepting uncertainty.
After hours of flight delays at Toronto Pearson Airport, our winter escape finally begins in the afternoon. From the airplane window, snowy rooftops and frozen landscapes slowly disappear beneath the clouds as we head toward sunshine and the sea.
As the sun sets, the sky glows gold and orange above endless blue water. Night falls mid-flight, and a breathtaking scene appears below — the bright lights of Miami sparkling like stars along the Florida coast. Highways, buildings, and neighborhoods shine brilliantly against the darkness.
But as we continue south toward Cuba, the view changes. The island below is quieter, with only scattered lights visible in the distance — a gentle reminder of the current power shortages and daily challenges here. Even so, the beauty of the Caribbean night remains calm and mysterious.
Finally, we descend into Jardines del Rey Airport. The cabin doors open, and warm tropical air wraps around us — a perfect contrast to the cold Canadian winter we left behind.
From snow to sunshine, from city lights to island nights — this journey marks the true beginning of our Cuba vacation adventure.
