Dating to the early 1960s, this IBM film shows the company's pavilion and displays at the 1939 New York World's Fair, and then presents a preview of the 1964 New York World's Fair which was then in the planning stage. The pavilion at the 1964 fair was designed by Charles Eames and architect Eero Saarinen, and featured a look at the world of the computer and the methods both man and machine use to solve problems.
• 0:09: Footage of the George Washington highway bridge as seen on the way to the 1939-40 at the New York World's Fair.
• 0:17: The Trylon and Perisphere symbols towered over the entertainment areas.
• 0:28: Visitors could experience rides and colorful pageants.
• 0:46: The parade featured floats, and IBM's float was prominent.
• 1:24: Patriotism and peace were constant themes. Scenes of the displays at the Fair which including glass blowing.
• 1:32: People responded enthusiastically to the fair's themes. The Railroads on Parade is shown with steam locomotives.
• 1:44-: Culture and art were showcased alongside industrial craftsmanship.
• 2:01: The Court of Nations displayed buildings from many countries, fostering internationalism. Italian, Czech, Romania, Swiss, Dutch, Poland and others pavilions are shown.
• 2:24: The first television tower was exhibited.
• 2:42: Visitors could test the latest car models on tracks at the Chrysler, Ford and GM pavilions. Westinghouse building shown with Elektro the Moto-Man robot at 2:34.
• 2:58: IBM pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair. IBM "Gallery of Science and Art" gained attention through product excellence and good taste.
• 3:17: IBM showcased brand new electric typewriters, the Radiotype machine, punch card based multipliers, sorters, and card punch machines.
• 3:46: Award winning IBM salesmen from all over the nation convened at 100% club meetings that were coincident with the Fair, discussing sales achievements.
• 4:14: Representatives from the typewriter and accounting machine divisions were highlighted. Legendary executives C. Gregg Thompson, Thomas J. Watson and J.J. Bricker are seen presenting.
• 6:36: The convention ended with brilliant fireworks. At 6:40 the IBM logo in fireworks briefly appears.
• 7:27: Preview of the 1964 World's Fair. The site of the 1939-40 fair, Flushing Meadows, is now a city park but will soon be home to the new fair. Architectural models show the future fair's buildings.
• 8:05: The Better Living exhibits aimed to enrich home lives. The Port Authority plans a heliport above the fair restaurant. The Pavilion of American Interiors will feature prize-winning rooms.
• 8:46-: Spectacular fountains will integrate with industrial exhibits. Eastman Kodak's tower will display giant transparencies.
• 9:05: General Motors showcase will be a global Futurama. Sinclair will recreate the age of dinosaurs.
• 9:30: The Cathedral of Light will feature high-intensity beams visible for miles.
• 9:47: The IBM exhibition will be an open pavilion resembling a grove of trees. The main attraction will be an ovoid theater raised high to maintain an open feeling. The Pavilion's spirit is evident before entering, with spaces for demonstrations and rest.
• 11:06: Scholars Walk allows visitors to study computer technology at leisure. A monument honors those who contributed to computer systems.
• 11:29: A pentagon in the garden houses five small theaters, each focusing on different computer aspects.
• 11:48: The largest theater will present an animated entertainment about computer systems.
A demonstration of computer techniques will use actual equipment.
• 12:31: The main event involves a three-dimensional maze with elevated walkways. Performers will entertain those waiting in the maze.
• 13:09: The host will greet new guests as they entered the information machine theater.
Visual projection devices delivered experiences and information.
• 13:37-: The show aimed to demystify computers and relate them to daily life. The fair will aim to promote world peace through understanding, symbolized by the Unisphere.
