The Shivji ki Savari in Vadodara is more than just a procession; it is the heartbeat of the city’s spiritual identity. Every year on Maha Shivratri, the streets of "Sanskarinagri" transform into a sea of devotion as Lord Shiva, along with his family, embarks on a royal tour (Nagarcharya) to bless his devotees.
Festival Details: Maha Shivratri 2026
This year, the celebration reached a new peak of grandeur, with high-profile attendees and massive crowds.
Date: Sunday, February 15, 2026.
Starting Point: The procession commenced at 3:30 PM from the historic Ranmukteshwar Mahadev Temple in Pratapnagar.
The Chariot: A magnificent brass-and-gold-themed rath featuring the Shiv Parivar—Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya—all seated on a giant Nandi, with an idol of Naradmuni leading the way.
The Route: Pratapnagar → Mandvi → Nyaymandir → Sursagar Lake → Dandia Bazaar → Sayajigunj → ending at Udaynarayan Temple (near Baroda Medical College).
The Highlight: The Maha Aarti at Sursagar Lake took place at approximately 7:15 PM. This year, Union Home Minister Amit Shah joined thousands of devotees to perform the aarti of the 111-foot gold-plated Sarveshwar Mahadev statue situated in the middle of the lake.
History and Significance
While Vadodara has ancient roots in Shiva worship, the modern tradition of Shivji ki Savari is relatively young but deeply impactful.
The Visionary: The procession was the brainchild of Swami Savliwala Maharajah, who envisioned a grand public celebration to unite the city in Shiva bhakti.
The Committee: It is organized annually by the Satyam Shivam Sundaram Samiti, led by local leaders like Yogesh Patel. The formal tradition of the Savari as we see it today began in 2013, though the spiritual groundwork (like the installation of the Sarveshwar Mahadev statue) started in the late 1990s.
Cultural Fusion: The event serves as a platform for Gujarat’s folk arts. You will see Panchmukh dhol players, folk dance mandals, and various "akharas" performing martial arts, blending the "Rudra" (fierce) and "Shant" (peaceful) aspects of Mahadev.
