Creating Art in Malachi's Lagoon: A Gift from the Sea
Sheltering from a strong wind warning at Croquet Island, I've spent my time in "Malachi's Lagoon" turning maritime relics into a unique piece of history.
Using nothing but a Leatherman saw and epoxy glue, I’ve crafted a rustic art frame for my son Nicholas and his girlfriend Danny. This isn't just a gift; it’s a timeline of my journey through the How Group islands.
The frame is built from a salvaged boat hatch and manufactured driftwood found on the shore. Inside, I’ve set incredible finds: World War II mine detonators, plungers, and the heavy chain that once anchored a bomb to the ocean floor.
I’ve also included 303 bullets from Portland Roads, coral-encrusted relics, and sea glass from the 1899 Pippon Island cyclone disaster. It’s a literal piece of the ocean's story, finished just as the rain begins to fall. As the sun sets on Croquet Island, the Malachi adventure nears its end.
