Getting closer to The Beatles—really hearing them—has always been a dream for fans. This remix of their 1963 recording of “Baby It’s You” brings you one step closer by separating Paul and George’s iconic “Sha La La La La” backing vocals and spreading them across the stereo field. Now, Paul sings from the left, George from the right, while John’s lead vocal stands strong in the center—an intimate, balanced soundstage far removed from the original stereo mix, where all vocals and guitars were crammed into the right channel.
Back in ’63, The Beatles were working with just two tracks. Most of the Please Please Me album—Baby It’s You included—was mixed with bass and drums panned to one extreme, vocals and other instruments to the other, and absolutely nothing in between. In this remix, the bass and drums now sit front and center, giving the track a fuller, more grounded presence.
The guitars and the lovely celeste (played by producer George Martin in a later overdub session) remain in their original positions, along with their original reverb. However, if you’re familiar with the old stereo version, you may notice there’s less reverb overall—especially on the drums. Originally, the drum reverb was smeared across the stereo field. Here, it's been gently scaled back and centered, giving the mix a drier, more “studio” feel. It’s not necessarily better—just a different, and perhaps more intimate, way to experience this wonderful performance.
The Beatles were deeply inspired by American girl groups and recorded several covers during their early days. Baby It’s You—written by Burt Bacharach, Mack David, and Barney Williams—was first recorded by The Shirelles, who took it into the Top 10 in 1961. The Beatles’ version pays faithful tribute, especially with those unforgettable “Sha La La La La”s, which many consider a high point of early '60s pop.
One last treat for the careful listener: just as the lead guitar break begins, you might catch a snippet of background studio chatter—something I’d never heard before despite decades of listening. Thanks to the de-mix, it's now revealed, no longer masked by overlapping guitar frequencies. I didn’t raise its volume, but it’s there. Hopefully, YouTube’s compression won’t hide it too much—on the master, it’s quite clear.
Thanks so much for listening—and for being part of this journey into The Beatles' sound!
