De-mixing vocals can sometimes reveal hidden details or correct misunderstandings—perhaps even my own lack of careful listening to the original. For over sixty years, I’ve always thought that Paul sang the harmony to John’s vocal throughout the entire song. Turns out, I was mistaken. Paul actually only harmonizes during the two choruses, along with some brief background “Ooh’s.”
In this remix, you’ll hear John’s vocal clearly in the center channel, with another of his vocals in the right channel, creating a duet with himself. In the two choruses, Paul’s harmonies appear in the left channel, blending with John’s vocal on the right. The background “Ooh’s” are spread across the stereo field. This remix greatly widens the vocal soundstage compared to the original, where all the vocals are centered. The new vocal placement adds depth and dimension that was never present in the original recording.
For a more modern feel, I’ve moved the drums and bass to the center, improving both energy and balance, while also allowing the guitars to shine on the outer edges. Only the guitars and John’s main vocal remain in their original positions.
“I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party” was recorded on Tuesday, September 29, 1964, and selected as the B-side for Capitol’s release of “Eight Days a Week.” Despite being a B-side, it received significant radio play and reached #39 on the Billboard Hot 100, while “Eight Days a Week” soared to #1.
Nothing was added to this remix that wasn’t part of the original recording. It’s simply a de-mixing and remixing of the existing elements.
Thank you for taking the time to listen!
