Gitschen (2513 m), also known as “The Skull”, is one of the most iconic peaks in Central Switzerland, standing proudly above Lake Uri (Urnersee) and the village of Flüelen. Together with its mighty neighbour Uri Rotstock (2929 m), this mountain represents one of the most beautiful alpine tours of the region.

For many hikers, Gitschen is considered one of the best panorama summits in Central Switzerland — a pure alpine experience with breathtaking views over the Urnersee, Reusstal, and the surrounding high peaks of Uri.

We started our tour from Isenthal, a small village reached via Isleten on the shores of Lake Uri. From Isenthal, you can drive up to Chlital, where a small road leads to Neuhüttli (road tax: 5 CHF/day). From there, you can either hike up to Musenalp (approx. 40 min) or take the private cable car.

The route from Musenalp to Gitschen summit is a fantastic alpine hike – T5 difficulty, well-marked and secured with chains and steel cables where needed. Despite its alpine character, the trail feels safe and enjoyable, with unforgettable mountain scenery all around.
