I recently discovered a hidden gem called Rustome Rice, a place that serves a delightful fusion of Maharashtrian and Parsi cuisine. They offer a variety of healthy options, including unique soups and refreshing sharbats, making it a perfect spot for food lovers. Located near Deccan Gymkhana, the ambiance and food are sure to impress.
The Soups
I started with their Dhansak Soup, which uses moong dal to achieve a rich and thick consistency. The addition of fried onions elevated the flavors to a whole new level—an absolute must-try! Another standout was their Drumstick Soup, packed with healthy ingredients like coriander, coconut, and mint. This calcium-rich soup is not only nutritious but also a comforting choice for winter evenings.
Refreshing Sharbats
Rustome Rice also offers unique sharbats made from flowers like hibiscus and gokarna. The owner, a food enthusiast, shared that his aim was to create guilt-free, healthy options for people who enjoy eating out. One adorable story came from a little boy I met there, who loves the gokarna sharbat so much that he has it every Monday. If his mom is in a good mood, he even gets a second glass!
The sharbats are served in charming glass bottles, and the hibiscus sharbat, with its lovely pink hue and mild sweetness, was my personal favorite.
Snacks
Next, I tried their cutlet, a vegetarian take on the Parsi mutton kheema pattice. Made with soya chunks and potatoes, it’s shallow-fried and served with an in-house sauce that perfectly complements it. What’s commendable is that they don’t reuse the oil, ensuring the food remains healthy. I couldn’t resist finishing half the cutlet in no time!
Main Course
For the main course, I opted for the Anda Dhaniya Rice. Priced at just ₹80 for a half portion and ₹120 for a full portion, it’s a flavorful dish garnished with coriander, mint, and fried onions. The rice isn’t overly spicy, making it suitable for all age groups to enjoy.
Dessert
To end my meal, I indulged in their Caramel Custard. The dessert was perfectly balanced, with the right hint of burnt sugar and vanilla flavors. It wasn’t overly sweet, which made it an ideal way to conclude this delightful meal.
Rustom Rice offers a wholesome four-course meal, starting with soups, appetizers, rice dishes, and ending with a dessert. If you’re looking for a fusion of taste, health, and affordability, this place is a must-visit!
