Welcome to the episode of "Epic Pune"! Pune, often referred to as the "Oxford of the East," is a vibrant city in the western state of Maharashtra. It's a unique place where modernity meets tradition, known for its rich culture, bustling markets, serene temples, and a thriving nightlife. As the second-largest city in Maharashtra after Mumbai, Pune has a lot to offer.
Kasba Ganpati Temple
I began my journey at the Kasba Ganpati Temple, a place of great significance in Pune. This temple is known as the "Manacha Pahila Ganpati," meaning it holds the honor of being the first Ganpati to be immersed during the Ganesh festival. The temple was established in 1893 and is a symbol of Pune’s deep-rooted traditions. Built by the Peshwas, its architecture is adorned with intricate carvings that showcase the craftsmanship of the time.
Lal Mahal
After visiting the Kasba Ganpati Temple, I headed to the Lal Mahal. This historic palace was built by Shahaji Raje Bhosale for his wife, Jijabai, and their son, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Lal Mahal is a place of great historical importance, as it is where Shivaji Maharaj spent much of his childhood. The palace is known for its connection to the Maratha empire and is a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
Shaniwar Wada
Next, I visited the iconic Shaniwar Wada, a fortress that stands as a testament to Pune’s grand history. Built in 1732 by Peshwa Baji Rao I, this 300-year-old structure was the seat of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire. The grandeur of Shaniwar Wada, even in its ruins, tells tales of its past glory. If you've seen the movie "Bajirao Mastani," you'll recognize this place as it played a significant role in the film. The heavy rain during my visit added a mystical charm to the place. Shaniwar Wada is always bustling with tourists and is a highlight of any Pune trip.
Tulsi Baug
I highly recommend that when you visit Pune, you explore Kasba Ganpati, Lal Mahal, Shaniwar Wada, and Tulsi Baug in one go, as they are all in close proximity. Tulsi Baug is a bustling market area where you can find everything from clothing and jewelry to home decorations. It’s the best place for shopping in Pune, and a visit here will give you a taste of the city's vibrant street culture.
Bipin Snacks
After soaking in the history, I stopped at Bipin Snacks to enjoy some Sabudana Khichadi, a staple food of Maharashtra. This dish is particularly popular during fasting periods and is a must-try when in Pune.
Saras Baug
Following my snack break, I headed to Saras Baug, a beautiful garden spread across 25 acres. This isn’t just a park; it’s a place steeped in history. Saras Baug is home to a peaceful Ganpati temple, making it a serene spot for both locals and tourists to unwind.
Shinde Chhatri
My next stop was Shinde Chhatri, a memorial dedicated to Mahadji Shinde, a prominent figure in the Maratha Empire. This place is a marvel of architecture, featuring intricate carvings and a serene atmosphere that reflects the grandeur of the Maratha era.
Camp Area
After Shinde Chhatri, I made my way to the Camp area, one of my favorite spots in Pune. Known for St. Paul’s Church and Ohel David Synagogue, Camp is also a shopper’s paradise with numerous options to explore.
Old Vada Pav Stall
Finally, I concluded my journey at a very old vada pav stall, over 100 years old, where a couple continues the tradition of making this iconic street food. The vada pav here is not just a snack; it’s a piece of Pune’s culinary heritage.
This wraps up my "Epic Pune" video, capturing the essence of this remarkable city. From temples and forts to bustling markets and serene gardens, Pune is a city that beautifully blends history with modernity, offering something for everyone.
